The entire archive of the works of Austrian motorsport photographer Artur Fenzlau have been deposited at the Technical Museum of Vienna where along with the works of other photographers of motorsport with Creative Common rights they are available for research and reuse for non commercial users without licensing fees. It is a shame more of the great icons of sports photography were not able to provide the same facility and even worse those cases where instead of being sent to an image management agency they were thrown unwanted by families into the bin.

ISDT 1968: Event daily check times and schedule sheets

I am often greatly indebted to Brian Catt who not only feeds me first hand memories of the great ISDT events in the 60’s and 70’s because…. ‘he was there’. His personal ISDT and Enduro knowledge is almost as vast as his library of photos and books. I was therefore very grateful when he passed me copies of the road time sheets for each day of this event along with the schedule options. I am sure these will prove to be very helpful to some readers.

These sheets set out the distances times and type of checks and where the feeling stops would be. The two columns on the extreme right gave optional schedules for the time for riders which would be set in the morning in accordance with prevailing weather and ground conditions.

In the distance are the famous cliffs at Loggerheads, at that time a Tea Garden owned by Crosville Coaches who ran regular trips from Liverpool. The Tea Gardens featured in pre war ISDT event in Wales where they were the most northerly point and served as the venue for lunch stops. The petrol pumps have long gone and there is still a petrol garage in Loggerheads despite their demise in many areas of rural Wales.

Thanks to al those who made the trip to these web pages in 2015 and also contributed material and comments to the work so far. Although the stats show a lot of readers across the world out there, it is very nice when we get comment, feedback and corrections to show our audience is active.

I’ve been lagging with a number of articles needing posting but here I’ve now put up a short article on the ISDT 1953 winning 498cc AJS ridden by Hugh Viney which turned up in auction in 2015 after its long term owner passed away.

ISDT 1953 – video of promotional movie discovered

1953 was a great year for Great Britain in the ISDT, with one of its dream team line ups in the Trophy team who gave us our last win of the premier event award. A movie of the event was recently spotted on Youtube and is now added to our ISDT Tube feature of all known ISDT movie footage.

At an early stage of the ISDT 1953 we catch Rider #1 FH Whittle with his Panther 598cc sidecar [HYG 477] going through scrutineering. A nice view of British Trophy team member #237 Jack Stocker riding his 496cc Royal Enfield into Scrutineering #37 Olga Kevelos on the start line with her 150cc CZ. #71 PVK Baldwin with his 348 Matchless CC riding for the Sunbeam MCC comes in for fuel then later on again passing through a woodland swamp. #231 David S Tye of the Silver Vase team with his 497cc BSA [NON 496] The course includes checkpoints in Bratislava, open countryside and woodland with the usual ISDT throng of fans and curious local spectating at this festival of motorcycle action. The video finishes with coverage of the night stages and hopefully this is only part 1 and I can find the second part to add to this one.

Sorry its been a while time waits for no-one and I’ve been struggling to keep up with a lot of things. Just checking through some old emails and I think I missed this one from our German contact SB who shares this image with us featuring the king of cool Steve McQueen.

Jürgen Valdeig  is an artist (art painter). He lives in Erfurt. Mr. Valdeig had contact with Dave Ekins, a team member of USA-Silvervase in ISDT 1964.  Ekins helped the artist Jürgen Valdeig in the scientific research.
Dave wrote:
“Dear Juergen,
Beautiful work! How kind of you to give me credit on the International Six Days Trial 1964- September page in Calendar 2014….. Wouldn`t it be great if we could meet in person someday.

Our gratitude to a reader Adam Sliwka who forwarded details of the Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe – National Digital Archive of Poland web site where an amazing library of historic images included a number from historic ISDT events. The images here are of the ISDT 1936 held in Germany. Of particular interest is the inclusion of images taken of riders on a very new Autobahn, one of the major civil engineering projects that Adolf Hitler had set about after he became the leader of Germany which it is contended were purposely designed to facilitate rapid advancement of his army should a war break out.

The event which started out in Freudenstadt a town in the beautiful Black Forest then headed east to Bavaria, south of Munich to be based at Garmisch Partenkirchen. We know from other years that the Autobahns were not just used to form the route but also became used for the events speed tests as these photos seem to show being held.

The following image although credited as being Ernst Henne at the ISDT 1936 is flawed in that he was not #88 however that number was used by German lady racer Ilse Thouret, which it is not. Henne was #176 in this event.

The ISDT 1939 was put on by the German Government with a view to demonstrating its army motorcyclists supremacy. The organisers encouraged many other European nations to send military teams. However, before the event came to an end the British withdrew their teams as the declaration that commenced WW2 was being made and the government wanted al its military personnel home before they could be detained. More images from the event from this collection are provided below.

I am grateful to our readerStewart Ellison who drew my attention to this excellent photo taken of #52 Miss E Foley with her Triumph 499cc ohv alongside #64 Miss L Ball James 499cc.

Vintage Photographs of Women and Motorcycles (21).jpg

#52 Miss E Foley 499c Triumph with #64 Miss L Ball James 499cc [DM4687] at Brooklands circuit ISDT 1925

The press results published on our ISDT 1925 page tells us this was the only Triumph entered that year in what was a strong representation of British entrants and was forced to retire on the final day of Saturday at the Speediest at Brooklands. Foley , we are told was ‘A Game rider with plenty of dash and endurance” but she had failed on the technical sections at Beggars Roost, Fingle Bridge and Alms but had made a magnificent recovery from an awkward incident on Bushcombe.

Miss L Ball who finished with a gold medal produced ‘the most outstanding performance of the trial”. Without loosing a single point all week had excelled at Bushcombe and Alms, and had not been in any serious difficulty on any of the hills.

ISDT 1939: the movie

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, come inside come inside.

The ‘Great Escape’ as it was known amongst UK ISDT fans, possibly the ‘Great Escape 2’ to those who are most familiar also with the events around the ISDT 1914, is one of the iconic events in the international off-road motorcycle reliability series dedicated to testing motorcyclist and motorcycle endurance where they did not expect machines to excel for a mere continuous 24 hours but a full 6 days to test their mechanical stamina and that of the riders mounted on them. You will find an embedded copy of the video down underneath the below photo of a British Norton.

Norton ISDT 1939

image- frame clipped from the NSU promotional movie of a British team Norton ISDT 1939

For a number of years http://www.audi.de through their online shop have been selling videos based on a promotional movie made for their NSU motorcycle marque that lies as part of the original Volkswagen Audi AG company heritage. In recent years they have continued to promote this heritage of the NSU brand by distribution of media material on their online store, which we linked to in our blog post here. However, we sadly noted recently that they are no longer listing availability of the DVD for the 1939 event for ISDT fans to purchase meaning it is no longer available. After some thought I have decided that in the interest of research and education into historic off road motorcycling and ISDT events that our own copy of the video should become a public resource up until any time in the future Audi.de decide to market this video again.

Therefore STT can announce the availability, for the moment, of this important memory of an ISDT event nearly 80 years ago… yes that’s nearly as old as my dear old mum….. sit back and be amazed at what these bikes could do in the hands of the expert riders of those days

I would welcome if anyone is able to identify and name every rider they spot by entrant number and name and post it here as a bit of crowd source content I would be happy to produce a cast list on this page helping family of those here to discover their family heritage in the ISDT

The entry list can be found here
